Projects at Bayer Innovation GmbH

Bayer Innovation GmbH (BIG) investigates and evaluates areas of innovation outside of the subgroups’ core activities and, where possible, develops them into viable new businesses for the Bayer Group. Its purpose is to input Bayer’s expertise in its core areas of health care, nutrition and high-tech materials into innovative projects as a basis for gaining entry to new and expanding markets.
One example of this is the manufacture of plant-made pharmaceuticals (PMP). Acquisition of the biotech company external link: Icon Genetics in January 2006 has given BIG its own PMP technology platform from which to develop innovative solutions for the biopharmaceuticals market.

Examples of ongoing projects at Bayer Innovation GmbH:

Effective January 1, 2006 Bayer Innovation GmbH took over the new growth opportunity “plant-made pharmaceuticals.” It is the company's aim to become a leading provider of plant-produced proteins for therapeutic and non-therapeutic use.
Based on vast in-house experience, Bayer Innovation pursues business opportunities for application in areas such as pharmaceuticals, vaccines and high-value industrial enzymes, as well as tailored business solutions, including licenses for various aspects of our technology and technology kits. Our multi-tiered business strategy reflects the breadths, complexity and unique need of the market place and ranges from “full product development,” “Co-development” and "Partnering – a product-specific solution” to licensing of technology and / or intellectual property.
The rationale for targeting the research field of “medical devices” is the ongoing trend towards less invasive and more personalized medical treatment methods.
So-called new “combined medical devices” are set to become the main drivers in the development of new and improved personalized medical treatment options. Probably the best-known example of these new types of medical devices are the so-called "drug-eluting Devices," combinations of traditional mechanical medical devices and drugs. Bayer Innovation GmbH is currently developing different types of anti-infective polymers for use in different medical device applications. Advanced wound care products present an attractive growth area within medical devices. Chronic wounds such as diabetic foot, venous and decubitus ulcers affect 1-2 % of the population in industrialized countries and lead to tremendous treatment costs accounting for billions of dollars worldwide. Though the introduction of moist wound healing has revolutionized wound treatment within the last 15 years, there are still many unmet medical needs to be addressed. It is the aim of Bayer Innovation to develop new innovative treatment methods and solve major unmet medical needs for difficult-to-heal chronic wounds.
